What Is Service Pack 1?

Microsoft® is continually working to improve its software, and as part of this effort, it develops and releases updates and fixes for recognized issues. On a regular basis, Microsoft combines many of these fixes into a single package and makes the package available for you to install on your computer. These packages are called service packs.

Microsoft® Windows® XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) contains the latest collection of updates to the Microsoft® Windows® XP family of operating systems. These updates pertain to:

If you have not yet installed the Windows XP Update Package, you only need to install Service Pack 1 because the security update is included. For further information about the Windows XP Update Package, see article Q309521, "Windows XP Update Package, October 25, 2001," in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

Before You Install Service Pack 1

All Users

Read these notes carefully before you install the service pack. The Readme file contains important information about installing and using SP1. Be sure to read this document before installing SP1.

The Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 Web site contains additional information about the service pack. If you choose to install the service pack from this Web site, the Express installation is recommended for users with one computer to upgrade. Installation types are discussed in detail on the Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 Web site.

For information about the specific updates and fixes included in SP1 and the files affected by the service pack, see article Q324720, "List of Fixes in Windows XP Service Pack 1," in the Microsoft Knowledge Base. Advanced Users

If you decide to install the service pack from the Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 Web site, the Network installation is available for advanced users.

The Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 Installation and Deployment Guide (SPDeploy.htm) provides additional information for advanced users and instructions for installing SP1 on multiple computers. This guide describes all of the other advanced documents and tools available in the service pack.

Before you install this service pack, be sure to read article Q324722, "Release Notes for Windows XP Service Pack 1," in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

Install Service Pack 1

You must be logged on to your computer as an administrator.


To install the service pack from the SP1 CD

  1. Click here to install SP1; it might take a few moments for the installation to begin.
  2. If Setup prompts you to run XPsp1.cmd or save it to disk, click Run this program from it's current location, and then click Open to continue the installation. Follow the instructions given by the Setup Wizard.
Install .NET Framework

Microsoft® .NET Framework is the Windows programming model for XML Web services as well as other types of programs. For information about .NET Framework, see the Microsoft .NET Framework Web site.


To install .NET Framework from the SP1 CD


  1. Click here to install .NET Framework; it might take a few moments for the installation to begin.
  2. When prompted to Open or Save the Setup.exe file, click Open. Follow the instructions given by the Setup Wizard.
