<P>Microsoft&reg; is continually working to improve its software, and as part of this effort, it develops and releases updates and fixes for recognized issues. On a regular basis, Microsoft combines many of these fixes into a single package and makes the package available for you to install on your computer. These packages are called <i>service packs</i>.</P>
<P>Microsoft&reg; Windows&reg;&nbsp;XP Service Pack&nbsp;1 (SP1) contains the latest collection of updates to the Microsoft&reg; Windows&reg;&nbsp;XP family of operating systems. These updates pertain to:</P>
<UL><li>Security issues (including the Windows&nbsp;XP Update Package)</li>
<li>Operating system reliability</li>
<li>Application compatibility</li>
<li>Windows&nbsp;XP Setup</li>
</ul>

<P class="indent">If you have not yet installed the Windows&nbsp;XP Update Package, you only need to install Service Pack&nbsp;1 because the security update is included. <P>Read these notes carefully before you install the service pack. The <a href=".\ReadMeSP.htm" target="_blank">Readme</a> file contains important information about installing and using SP1. Be sure to read this document before installing SP1.</P>
<P>The <a href="http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=8602" target="_blank">Microsoft Windows&nbsp;XP Service Pack&nbsp;1 Web site</a> contains additional information about the service pack. If you choose to install the service pack from this Web site, the Express installation is recommended for users with one computer to upgrade. Installation types are discussed in detail on the <a href="http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=8602" target="_blank">Microsoft Windows&nbsp;XP Service Pack&nbsp;1 Web site</a>.</P>

<B>Advanced Users</B>
<P>If you decide to install the service pack from the <a href="http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=8602" target="_blank">Microsoft Windows&nbsp;XP Service Pack&nbsp;1 Web site</a>, the Network installation is available for advanced users.</P>
<P>The <i>Microsoft Windows&nbsp;XP Service Pack&nbsp;1 Installation and Deployment Guide</i> (<a href=".\support\tools\spdeploy.htm">SPDeploy.htm</a>) provides additional information for advanced users and instructions for installing SP1 on multiple computers. This guide describes all of the other advanced documents and tools available in the service pack.</p>
<P>The <i>Microsoft Windows&nbsp;XP Hotfix Installation and Deployment Guide</i> (<a href=".\support\tools\hfdeploy.htm" target="_blank">HFDeploy.htm</a>) provides instructions for installing hotfixes on multiple computers.</P>

<p><b>To install the service pack from the SP1 CD</b></P>

<li>Click <a href=".\xpsp1.cmd" target="_blank">here</a> to install SP1; it might take a few moments for the installation to begin.</li>
<li>If Setup prompts you to run XPsp1.cmd or save it to disk, click <B>Run this program from it's current location</b>, and then click <b>Open</b> to continue the installation. Follow the instructions given by the Setup Wizard.</li>
