<HR><FONT face="Verdana,Arial,Helvetica" size="2"> This Customer Support Diagnostics package for Microsoft® Windows® XP with Service Pack 1 (SP1) consists of important tools and data for diagnosing Windows XP system problems. When you contact Microsoft customer support for help, they will direct you to use these resources.<BR><BR><BR>

<LI><FONT face="Verdana,Arial,Helvetica" size="2"> <B>Symbols.</B> Symbols are names that software developers assign to various pieces of code. The symbols for SP1 are bundled into files, which you must install on your computer before you can use the debugging tools to diagnose system problems in Windows XP. The package includes both retail and debug versions of the symbols for Windows XP installations with SP1. For more information about these symbols, see <A href=".\dbg.htm#installsymbols">Install Symbols</A>.<BR><BR></FONT></LI>

<B>Debugging tools.</B> Debugging tools enable you to analyze failures and other problems that occur in your operating system and the applications running on it. The Debugging Tools for Windows package features WinDbg, which is a powerful debugger with a graphical interface that can debug both user-mode and kernel-mode code. The package also includes the KD, NTSD, and CDB debuggers, among others. For more information about debugging tools, see <A href=".\dbg.htm#installtools">Install Debugging Tools</A>.</FONT></LI>

<HR><FONT face="Verdana,Arial,Helvetica" size="2"> Windows XP with SP1 is available in two versions: the retail (free) build and the debug (checked) build. Each of these versions is available in both a 32-bit version and a 64-bit version. The 32-bit symbol packages require approximately 750 megabytes (MB) of hard disk space, whereas the 64-bit symbol packages require approximately 560 MB. <FONT face="Verdana,Arial,Helvetica" size="2">The Debugging Tools for Windows package is available in both a 32-bit version and a 64-bit version. The 32-bit version is appropriate for most users. However, if you are planning on debugging an application on a computer with an Itanium-based processor, you should use the 64-bit version. Note that you can install the 64-bit version of these debugging tools only on 64-bit versions of Windows.<BR><BR>
